Little Big Planet / Sony:
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe hardly need too much of an introduction - as one the largest video games companies in the world, they have heralded huge evolutions in gaming with the release of each of their flagship consoles ever since way back in 1995 when the original PlayStation was released. Now, with the PlayStation 3 comfortably settled in Europe, Sony are able to showcase some of the best graphics and gameplay you've ever seen.
You might not have heard about LittleBigPlanet yet, but you're definitely going to soon. The game is being developed by Media Molecule (the founders of which created the cult hit, Rag Doll Kung Fu), and early gameplay videos have already generated a heap of interest. The unique incorporation of user-creation elements and massive potential for creativity linked seamlessly throughout look like great fun, and we can't wait to get our hands on a copy.

PARTYKIDZ
Character Design Brief
Background
Partykidz.com is a web-based company offering parents a choice of ‘out of the box’ solutions for every type of child party occasion. This allows the parent to select from a wide range of merchandise - including all the necessary table coverings, plates, cups, and other miscellaneous items.
Apart from these essentials, Partykidz.com also offers all the extras to add fun to the party, such as balloons, banners, gift bags and novelty items.
All of the above are available in different themes, from Disney to action heroes.
The advantage for parents is that everything needed to make the party a success can be chosen and ordered on-line from a single source, without any need to struggle to come up with ideas or trudge round the shops.
They simply order a shopping list of selected items, which can then be dispatched either to the parents’ home or the party venue as required.
There are a growing number of companies that offer this type of service on-line in the UK, and Partykidz.co.uk wants to establish a unique point of difference that will make them stand out from the competition.
The market
The market is more or less everyone that has a child of pre-school age or pre-teen - and has access to the web. Possibly with a busy lifestyle or other commitments that make it difficult for them to find time to plan or purchase everything for what they know to be a special event in their child’s life. Or, possibly parents who are simply looking for ideas.
Whether we like it or not, there is a trend for parents to feel they have to at least equal the last party their child attended and find a ‘new’ element.
Task
To stand out in the market and offer parents something unique, Partykidz.co.uk would like to bring their name to life in the form of a little group of young characters who love life and know have to have fun - two boys, and three girls. These could then be applied to all forms of merchandise, and possibly lead to spin-offs.
Each character will eventually be given a name and potted personality by the client. But feel free to develop your own characters – the brave one, the naughty one, the shy one, the clever one, the nice one . . . . whatever you think different children might identify with.
The age of the characters should be fairly indeterminate, but certainly no older than 12 or 13. They don’t necessarily have to be all the same age.
So the requirement is to create this crew in a distinctive graphic style, in a way that lends itself to being reproduced in different forms, from being printed on a paper napkin to being evolved into a 3-dimensional toy figure.
Having said that, at this stage the most important task is to develop a style, not to demonstrate how it would work across all these applications.
